Outbreak Notification
Date 28th March 2008

Hi there

For the last two weeks these appears to be continual cases reported from the current hot spots namely Grahamstown to Port Elizabeth and North of Gauteng particularly Muldersdrift. Many cases have now been reported South of Johannesburg.  In the last 7 days 45 new cases have been reported

I have noticed that the cases mostly are from the previous three weeks and this could be due to the cold snap we experienced during mid March.

There also seems to be far fewer cases reported during March than expected based on previous years % reports which puts March as having about 60% of the total reports. It also seems that our % of mortalities in increasing this year. 2007 – 52% 2008 - 58%

There is also a lot of media interest this year focusing on the E/Cape outbreak. We welcome the exposure as it forms part of out awareness policy but I caution rash statements to the press about “new strains” and “ineffective vaccine” with out any scientific evidence. So far the E/Cape have three strains identified 6,7 and 9. There is no evidence of a new strain and we can see that a large proportion of the mortalities have no vaccination record.

The State vet from the E/Cape has imposed movement control into, within and out of the province. We welcome this initiative even though it might be a little of closing the door after the horse has bolted.

I have included the overall stats in this mail. If you need to see the specific areas please go the map on our website.  T

Please insist that all cases you hear of are reported on the website

The Western Cape Agriculture Department has imposed an embargo on the
movement of horses into the province. This follows an outbreak of African
horse sickness (AHS) in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape.

Spokesperson for the provincial Agriculture Ministry, Alie van Jaarsveld,
says the decision was taken to protect horses currently in the Export Zone.
He says more R200 million [25 417 172.70 USD] was lost a few years ago due
to a ban placed on imports by the European Union.

Dear Riders, Breeders and Horse Friends

I am attempting to organise a Namibian excursion for the well known South African Equestrian photographer, Hennie van den Berg (PRESTIGE PHOTOGRAPHY) for the beginning of May 2008.
Hennie is one of the best horse photographers in South Africa and attends almost every big event (Show jumping, Dressage, Showing etc.) all over the country.

Should anyone be interested in exploiting his services, please contact me as soon as possible.  The arrangements, itinerary and costs involved are subject to your responses, as his airfare will be shared by all interested parties.  Thus, the more people involved the cheaper for all!!

Keep in mind that everyone involved will be responsible for, and will have to coordinate transportation for Hennie to and from the different points of destination.  He will be based 80km east of Windhoek at Farm Bodenhausen, and I trust that those staying far away would provide accommodation at no cost.

Warmblood Breeders: Should Hennie take photos of your stallions, it will be ready in time for publication in the stallion register, compiled by Lynda Rabie.

I believe that this is a great opportunity for all of us, as we would have superior quality photographs for our websites / brochures / or other advertising means. Please, don't let this prospect pass, contact me without delay.  I would like to start planning as soon as possible.

We wish to congratulate Claratal Stud to their new imported Stallion Bellini Go.

Ms Anette and Mr Heiko Freyer, Thank you for your confidence in horse breeding in Namibia and thus giving new, much needed impulses to this small industry

Bellini Go
De 309090140198
Born: 29.06.1998
168 cm (2 ½ years old)

Bellini Go is a highly noble stallion with an unmistakably Trakehner exterior. His ground-covering, efficient movement is impressive. At his keuring he showed energetic impulsion and light-footed movement, with good suspension. He was the only three year old keured in Ausfeldt and he impressed with his capacity to jump.

He passed his stallion licensing in Prussendorf 2002  and gained marks like Character 8.0, Readiness to perform  9.0, Constitution 8,5 Rittigkeit 7,96 and jumping abillety 8.0.
