The welcoming function held two days before the ride gave each team a chance to introduce themselves and their horses and sing their national anthem. Good food and cold beer was at the order of the day. A great social event giving everyone the opportunity to get to know the competition and make some new friends.
Entries and the vet check, a day before the ride was smooth and without any problems. As it was only one day before the ride, but riders where getting more and more nervous about the ride. Teams were making plans, organizing and getting ready for the ride.
The riders found the ride tough and tiring. The Australian and Brazil teams where amazed at the height of Dune 7 and the amount of sand on the desert leg. I am sure they found the ride unique in every way. I heard comments like "wow" , "its so big" and "are you serious?" from the first time riders and those who has never been to the Walvisbay ride. The desert leg also scared some of the new comers, with comments like "its so lonely out here" and "so much sand!!" overheard from some of the riders.
I am sure that they all would agree that the Walvisbay Endurance Ride is one of the worlds toughest endurance rides. (I hope we did not scare them)
Next year we will see even more entries, even more international riders and a much bigger ride.
We would like to congratulate all the riders that completed the ride. Well done to the Namibian Team for winning the Walvisbay 2007 Africa Championship and to the Namibian individual rider. The reward for Best Conditioned Horse was awarded to Anna Wucher on Shaira who was also on the Namibian Team.
I would also like to congratulate NERA for such a great ride. It was a big success and I am sure every one enjoyed it.
I guess it is time to get your horse prepared for the Walvisbay 2008 ride, it requires fitness from both horse and rider. Also time to train those grooms and get them fit. (I have heard that NERA will be supplying special extra heavy water buckets for the too carry in 2008, hahaha) We often forget the grooms and although it seems that you are less important than the riders, we all know we cannot ride successful without you, so thanks guys!!!
I would like to applaude a single rider, that completed but did not get a placing. It was really entertaining hearing you sing to your horse, on the last leg, in the desert. I think you had a great idea to lift the spirit for your horse and yourself!!!
SEE YOU NEXT YEAR @ WALVISBAY 2008!!!
